News of what CHUD calls “a movie many of us anticipate and fear in equal measure” (we do) has begun to circulate off the back of the release of the movie 300 (since 300’s director, Zach Snyder, has been now commissioned to do Watchmen too). There’s a video interview with him at Reelz Channel about it. A version of the 300 trailer was posted to YouTube with an image of Rorschach subliminally spliced in. It’s predictably been taken down, but Ain’t It Cool News has posted a high-quality copy of the image. It’s very dark, so I took the liberty of running it through Photoshop, which reveals more detail than I’ve seen elsewhere. Click to embiggen:
Nice. Just when you think you can’t get any dorkier, you find yourself doing something like that of an evening. Anyway, all this excitement prompted me to dig through my bookmarks to find previous Watchmen goodness. Wikipedia have a good account of the troubled movie project history thus far. As for the comic itself, there’s Watching The Detectives, a companion to the graphic novel with extensive annotations, and a different version of the same idea created by Ralf Hidebrandt.
But who knows, maybe it will get made this time and be OK. After 24 and Lost and so on, they should be doing it as a TV mini-series but even as a movie, at least this time Arnie will be too busy to play Dr Manhattan (Richard Gere? Robin fricking Williams!?!), so it may have been worth waiting after all.
